Post Dutch Still Life.
I tried to rethink the classic themes of Dutch still life. Fish, Seafood, Smoking pipe are often depicted on the canvases of the Dutch and Flemish masters. Their symbolism was easily understood by viewers of that time. Fish was considered as a symbol of Christ, seafood could indicate abundance and luxury, while having some erotic overtones too. A smoking pipe could point the transience of human existence. I decided to play with the classic attributes of the Dutch still life. In my bold colored ironic series with minimalistic compositions I’m wondering whether the Dutch still life symbolism is still alive.
